The Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS)

Thursday, August 23rd 2018

PRESS RELEASE The Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) is an identification authentication and force protection tool that is fully operational on military bases throughout the world. Starting July 9, 2018 DBIDS will be integrated to select military installations. Not all installations will integrate at the same time so it is important to check the base website prior to visiting the base.

DBIDS uses a wireless handheld device to scan the I.D.'s, similar to the devices used now by the gate guards. This system will check criminal and military data sources to determine who is authorized aboard the base. This system will also share data securely and efficiently. The overall goal is to increase security for the installations.

DoD issued I.D. holders are automatically enrolled into DBIDS upon their first scan entering the base. The most affected personnel are military contractors and sponsored visitors. They will need to go to the visitor's center on base to enroll. To speed up …

Facial Recognition

Tuesday, June 5th 2018

BLOG POST 101 Facial recognition is another distinct biometric that allows for identification of facial features matched against a stored image of an individual’s face. Scanning for facial recognition features often involves setting up a digital camera that will scan an image and compare that image against a second stored image. This form of biometrics has helped police officers review footage and find suspects they are looking for. It has also been used with border control to help verify the identity of individuals attempting to cross over into different countries.

One of the adjoining elements of facial recognition is a facial thermograph. This helps capture an individual’s physical traits. The technology that is used in facial thermography captures heat patterns which are created by the branching of blood vessels and which are emitted from the skin. One of the reasons for the efficacy of facial thermography is that every individual produces a different thermograph. No thermogr…

GCE, SharpSwitch, Inc. and Camp Lejeune, NC announce new DBIDS installation

Tuesday, June 5th 2018

PRESS RELEASE Seaside, CA, June 5, 2018 - Global Connection to Employment (GCE), SharpSwitch, Inc. and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, announce new DBIDS installation.

Earlier this week, Marine Corps Installations across the region began transitioning to a new government-owned access control system called Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS). This new and enhanced system will replace RAPIDGate and MCESS for contractors and other non-DoD-affiliated personnel requiring installation access. DBIDS is already installed at more than 320 sites with over 5 million registered personnel and unlike previous systems, this one is a free service.

Current RAPIDGate or MCESS credentials can easily be switched out for a DBIDS credential and new contractors can apply for a DBIDS credential using the same vetting requirements as previously required. RAPIDGate/MCESS credentials will be honored until September 30, 2018. After this date, all contractors will be required to have a DBIDS creden…

Iris Recognition and Retinal Scans

Tuesday, May 8th 2018

BLOG POST 100 Iris recognition is an increasingly popular method of biometric authentication which starts with examining the irises of the eyes. The process measures for characteristics that are unique to an individual and can be used to authenticate that an individual has the appropriate permissions to gain access to a site or material. Iris recognition is relied on for complex patterns of the iris which are unique, stable and can be seen from some distance, all of which helps increase the efficacy of security measures.

Iris recognition is unique from retina scanning as scanning examines the blood vessels surrounding the eyes as opposed to studying characteristics of the irises. Retinal scanning also involves ocular-based technology and is highly invasive, where iris recognition uses video camera technology to acquire specific details and structures of the eye and is not invasive.

One of the key benefits of iris recognition is that it is resistant to false matches. This means i…

Defense Manpower Data Center Announces the Global Release of DBIDS 5

Monday, March 19th 2018

PRESS RELEASE Seaside, CA, March 19, 2018 — Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC), in conjunction with Global Connection to Employment and SharpSwitch, Inc., today announced a major release of their identity management and physical access control software suite, Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) v5. DBIDS 5 is the world’s largest distributed physical access control system, securing US military and government installations around the globe. A highly-available system, DBIDS 5 continues to provide sub-second access decisions for controlled perimeters even when the installation’s network connection is severed, thus enabling an installation to maintain its physical access security profile. Utilizing a combination of biometric and smartcard-based cryptographic authentication at an installation’s controlled perimeters, DBIDS 5 prevents unauthorized access attempts while also identifying people with law enforcement alerts.
